Resigned his U.S. Army commission in February 1861 and was commissioned as a captain in the Confederate Artillery shortly afterward. After promoting through the grades, Lee was promoted to brigadier general in November 1862, major general in August 1863, and lieutenant general in February 1865. Major campaigns and battles include Fort Sumter, Seven Pines, Savage's Station, Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Vicksburg (captured), Atlanta, and Nashville (wounded).
