Promoted to brigadier general in May 1861 and major general in February 1862. Major campaigns and battles include the West Virginia campaign, the Vicksburg campaign, the Atlanta campaign, Franklin, and Nashville. Loring served in Egyptian Army after the war, and he engaged in several business ventures when he returned in 1879. He died in New York in December 1886 and is buried in St. Augustine, Florida.
