Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of colonel.) Graduated from West Point, 1843; Mexican War veteran. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in April 1861 and was appointed as a major in the Confederate Army soon afterward. After promoting through the grades, Heth was promoted to brigadier general in January 1862 and major general in May 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Lewisburg, the Kentucky campaign, Chancellorsville (wounded), Gettysburg (wounded), the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Appomattox. After the war, Heth worked in mining, insurance, railroading, and the federal government. Heth died in September 1899 and is buried in Richmond, Virginia. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
