He was elected major of the company in May 1861. After promoting through the grades, Gordon was promoted to brigadier general in November 1862 and major general in May 1864. Major campaigns and battles include the Peninsular campaign, Seven Pines, Antietam (wounded), Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Third Winchester, Cedar Creek, and the defense of Richmond. After the war, Gordon returned to Georgia, where he served as a U.S. senator and governor. He died in Miami, Florida, in January 1904 and is buried in Atlanta, Georgia. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
