(Though no insignia on uniform, Morgan is believed to be colonel of the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry in this engraving made from a photo.) Mexican War veteran. Joined the Confederate cause once Kentucky neutrality ended and was commissioned as a captain in the Confederate Cavalry in September 1861. After promoting through the grades, Morgan was promoted to brigadier general in December 1862. The only major battle in which Morgan took part was Shiloh; he spent the majority of his service as a Confederate raider in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.
