After promoting through the grades, Wheeler was promoted to brigadier general in October 1862, major general in January 1863, and lieutenant general in February 1865. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Corinth, the Kentucky campaign, Perryville, the Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, and the Carolinas. By 1870 Wheeler had settled in north Alabama, where he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for numerous terms. During the Spanish-American War, he served as major general in the volunteers and saw action in Cuba and in the Philippine-American War. Wheeler retired as a brigadier general in the Regular Army and died in New York in January 1906; he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Sources: Boatner, Mark M. The Civil War Dictionary.
