Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Corinth, the Kentucky campaign, Perryville, the Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, and the Carolinas. By 1870 Wheeler had settled in north Alabama, where he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for numerous terms. During the Spanish-American War, he served as major general in the volunteers and saw action in Cuba and in the Philippine-American War.
