Summary: | (Uniform indicates rank of major general.) Graduated from West Point, 1838; Seminole War and Mexican War veteran. Resigned his U.S. Army commission and was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate Infantry in March 1861. After promoting through the grades, Johnson was promoted to brigadier general in December 1861 and major general in February 1863. Major campaigns and battles include the Shenandoah Valley campaign (wounded), Second Winchester, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania (captured and exchanged), and Nashville (captured and exchanged).
