Elected to Congress in 1856 and resigned in May 1861. Appointed as a colonel of the 2nd Arkansas Infantry. Promoted to brigadier general in September 1861 and major general in April 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Wilson's Creek, Shiloh, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and the Atlanta campaign (wounded). Lost an eye during the Atlanta campaign and spent the remainder of the war in administrative commands in the West. Lived in Mexico for two years after the war before returning to Arkansas.
