Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of major general or higher. Only known wartime photograph.) Son of President Zachary Taylor. Elected as a colonel for the 9th Louisiana Infantry after the outbreak of war. Promoted to brigadier general in October 1861, major general in July 1862, and lieutenant general in May 1864. Major campaigns and battles include the 1862 Valley campaign, Seven Days', and the Red River campaign. After the war, Taylor returned to Louisiana, where he used his national political connections to obtain a lenient Reconstruction period.
