Promoted to brigadier general in June 1861, major general in October 1861, lieutenant general in October 1862, and general in February 1864. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas (wounded), the Kentucky campaign, Perryville, the Red River campaign, and the Arkansas campaign. After the war, Smith lived briefly in Cuba. He returned to the United States and became a college president and mathematics professor. Smith died in Sewanee, Tennessee, in March 1893 and is buried there.
