After promoting through the grades, Stuart was promoted to brigadier general in September 1861 and to major general in July 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Harpers Ferry, First Manassas, Dranesville, the Peninsular campaign, Seven Days', Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Yellow Tavern.
