Resigned his U.S. Army commission in 1851 and taught at the Virginia Military Institute for the next ten years. Appointed brigadier general in the Confederate Army in June 1861. Promoted to major general in October 1861 and lieutenant general in October 1862. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, the Shenandoah Valley campaign, the Peninsular campaign, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.
