Appointed Superintendent of West Point in January 1861 but held the post for only a few days; resigned from the U.S. Army in February 1861. Appointed a brigadier general in the Confederate Army and assigned to command the Confederate forces at Charleston. After Fort Sumter, Beauregard was given command of the Confederate forces near Manassas and promoted to full general after First Manassas. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, Shiloh, Drewry's Bluff, Petersburg, and the Carolinas. After the war, Beauregard was a railroad executive, supervisor of the Louisiana Lottery, commissioner of public works in New Orleans, and a writer.
