| Summary: | (No wartime uniformed photographs are known to exist.-- W. Davis) Graduated from West Point, 1815. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in 1861 and was appointed a brigadier general in the Confederate Army in March 1861. Promoted to full general in August 1861. Served entire war as an adjutant and inspector general in the Confederate War Department. The highest ranking officer in Confederate Army.
