Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of major general.) Graduated from West Point, 1827; resigned his U.S. Army commission shortly afterward to pursue a career in the ministry. Appointed a major general in the Confederate Army in June 1861 and lieutenant general in October 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Frankfort, Belmont, Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesboro, the Tullahoma campaign, Meridian, and the Atlanta campaign.
