"The Montgomery County High School at Ramer has the distinction of being the first school in the State to receive a Civilian Defense Service Award for full cooperation and support of the war effort through civilian defense activities. The student body has developed a fine program, which it is carrying out in the spirit of true patriotism. Officers of the Ramer Student Defense Council are shown above. Reading from left to right they are: Miss Louise Kelly, sponsor; Hayward Cosby, Vice-President; Mamie Ruth Mills, Reporter; P. H. Harris, Principal; Margaret Tompkins, Secretary; Franklin Mosely, Parliamentarian; Mary Ola Ford, President; and Tommye Jean Sellers, Treasurer. Beneath the group is pictured the service flag and honor roll made up of all former students of Ramer School, who have entered the service. The entire school is proud of its record--235 blue stars and 3 gold ones. The service flag and honor roll are kept up to date by the Ninth Grade Homeroom under the direction of Miss Kelly, Sponsor of the Defense Council." This image and caption appeared on page 3 of the December 1944 issue of Home Front, the monthly bulletin of the Alabama State Council of Defense. |
