This image appeared in NARRATIVE OF JAMES WILLIAMS, AN AMERICAN SLAVE, WHO WAS FOR SEVERAL YEARS A DRIVER ON A COTTON PLANTATION IN ALABAMA, which was the first slave narrative published by the American Anti-Slavery Society. J. G. Whittier wrote the book based on an oral narrative by Williams.
