Summary:Stone was born Alabama around 1842. He joined the U.S. Navy in September 1857 (serving as acting midshipmen) but resigned January 1861. He then enlisted in the C.S.A. Navy in April 1861, serving as a midshipman aboard the steam sloop CSS McRae in New Orleans. Stone was promoted to 2nd lieutenant in February 1862 (later serving at the Jackson station in 1862 and aboard the cruiser CSS Florida in 1862 and 1863), and he was appointed 1st lieutenant of the Provisional Navy in January 1864. On October 7, 1864, he was captured in Bahia, Brazil, and was sent to Fort Warren in the Boston Harbor, where he was until January 26, 1865. After the Civil War, he served as the county treasurer in Mobile, Alabama, where he died on January 18, 1900. Stone is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery in Mobile.
