Mitchell was a delegate to the constitutional convention of 1861 (also known as the Secession Convention). During the Civil War, he served as a lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Alabama Infantry and a colonel of the 34th Alabama Infantry, C.S.A. This portrait was painted by Joseph Thoits Moore.
