Summary:This image appeared in the Birmingham News on February 20, 1944, with the following caption: "Alabama Yams Shipped to Housewives - L. B. Sprott and T. J. Jones of Sprott, Ala., have shipped the first carload of sweet potatoes branded as 'Alarico' yams and guaranteed as U.S. No. 1 or better. The yams were shipped Friday to arrive in Chicago Monday and will reach housewives early in the week. House-cured, they are graded and packed under the supervision of the Extension Service of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and Federal-State Inspection Service. The potatoes are being marketed as part of a statewide marketing system being developed jointly b y A.P.I., the Alabama State Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Agriculture and the Farm Bureau Federation."
