Summary:Front of card: "The Way it Was / November 10, 1868, the name of Sanford county seat was changed from Swayne to Vernon." Back of card: "A group of citizens standing in front of A. A. Summer's General Store chose the new and permanent name for the town. 'Let's name it Mt. Vernon,' one said. 'No', said another. 'There's a Mt. Vernon community between here and Fayette'. Then a man spoke up. 'Name it Vernon, for I'm Edmond Vernon, from Vernon, England!' And it was that the new name for Swayne, Swayne Courthouse or Big Pond was coined 'Vernon' for Edmond Vernon from Vernon, England. / November 10, 1868."
