Mercer, a native of Marengo County, Alabama, was an apprecentice and assistant to artist Giuseppe Moretti. The following note is written on the back of the photograph: "Sculptor of the Julia S. Tutwiler tablet, just placed in the Capitol at Montgomery, Ala."
