Two of the photographs show the start of the ship's construction at the Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1940; congressmen from Alabama attended the event. The U.S.S. Alabama was launched from Portsmouth on February 16,1942. Also included is an envelope with an image of the ship.
