Reverse side of mourning pin owned by Mrs.B. L. Hammond, Birmingham, Ala.
Tradition says the pin was taken from a woman near the site of Montgomery by the Indian who scalped her. A grateful Indian chief later gave it to Dr. John Naftel, great-grandfather of Mrs. Hammond.
