Description
Summary:"Sgt. John Y. Udaka, of Birmingham, American born Japanese, has been in service three and a half years, six months of which have been spent in France and Italy, fighting with the 92nd Division. He is now a patient at Northington General Hospital. Udaka, assistant squad leader, was wounded in Italy by fragments of an 88 mm shell. The three men next to him were killed outright. 'It was rough, hilly country,' he said. 'We'd no sooner fight our way over one hill when we'd face another one. The woods were so thick that many men were killed by falling trees.' Udaka was hit in both legs and arms. During his six months over, John had the chance to see only one USO show, but he made up for lost time by seeing that one three times. 'Sure was good,' he said. 'Only wish I'd had the chance to see a few more. But we were kept kind of busy.'"
