description The plaque reads, "In this hall the ordinance of Secession which withdrew Alabama from the Union of Sovereign States, was passed Jan. 11, 1861. To commemorate this fact this tablet is erected by the Ladies' Memorial Association of Montgomery, Nov. 7, 1911." Governor Lurleen Wallace is standing in the foreground, addressing a joint session of the legislature, which was held to discuss the federal court order requiring statewide school desegregation. The governor had asked the legislators to give her the power to resist the order, so they met to consider her request. Educators and other witnesses offered testimony for and against the integration order. This image was taken for (but not used in) the article "U.S. Order 'Impossible,' Educators Say at Hearing" by Mary Ellen Gale, which appeared on page 1 of The Southern Courier for April 8-9, 1967. The issue is available online (not on the ADAH website): http://www.southerncourier.org/low-res/Vol3_No15_1967_04_08.pdf
