In line are John Collins Lawson, his wife, Zeola Bradley Lawson, his daughter-in-law, Novella Lawson (holding her baby, Sharon), and his grandson, Ted Lawson (who is holding a spelling book). J. C. Lawson was a farmer, minister, teacher, and school principal, and he was the first person in Lowndes County to pass the literacy test that had been required for voter registration. Because Lawson was partially blind he walked with a cane (white with a red tip), which he is carrying in this photograph. Mattie Kate and Rosie Mallard (sisters-in-law) are standing in line in front of the Lawson family. The image was used in the photo spread "Rural Election Day," which appeared on page 3 of The Southern Courier for November 19-20, 1966. The issue is available online (not on the ADAH website): http://www.southerncourier.org/low-res/Vol2_No47_1966_11_19.pdf |
