Summary: | Peppler was the principal photographer and photo editor for the Southern Courier from July 1965 to mid-1968. This photograph may have been taken by Gloria Bradford, darkroom technician for the Courier. Fred Gray and Thomas Reed were both running for the 31st District seat in the Alabama House of Representatives (Barbour, Bullock, and Macon Counties). They lost in 1966 but won in 1970, becoming the first African Americans to serve in the Alabama House since Reconstruction. This image was taken for (but not used in) the photo spread "New Faces in Alabama Politics," which appeared on page 3 of The Southern Courier for April 30-May 1, 1966. The issue is available online (not on the ADAH website): http://www.southerncourier.org/low-res/Vol2_No18_1966_04_30.pdf
