Candidate Fred Gray is standing on the left. This photograph may have been taken by Gloria Bradford, darkroom technician for the Southern Courier. Gray and Thomas Reed were both running for the 31st District seat in the Alabama House of Representatives (Barbour, Bullock, and Macon Counties). They lost in 1966 but won in 1970, becoming the first African Americans to serve in the Alabama House since Reconstruction. This image was taken for (but not used in) the photo spread "New Faces in Alabama Politics," which appeared on page 3 of The Southern Courier for April 30-May 1, 1966.
