Earl studied painting in London and New England before traveling to Nashville in 1817 to paint this portrait of General Andrew Jackson, who had emerged as a national hero during the Creek War of 1813-1814 and the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. He became a close associate of Jackson and frequent painter of his likeness. This portrait depicts Jackson near the height of his political career, following his service in the U.S. Senate and before his election to the presidency in 1828. Copies of this original are held by the National Portrait Gallery and the Hermitage. |
