Hugo Black received the Thomas Jefferson Medal from the Southern Conference for Human Welfare at their meeting in Birmingham. Black represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 1927 to 1937, and he served as an associate justice on the United States Supreme Court from 1937 to 1971.
