Floats in profusion launched in grand style the period of merriment in Alabama's port city. Ahead are 11 days of fun and frolicking - parties and parades. The annual celebration will reach its climax the night of February 22, Fat Tuesday. Ash Wednesday will bring an end to the celebrations and beginning the period of Lent - 40 days, not counting Sundays.
