This photograph was published in the Birmingham News on June 24, 1966, with the following caption: "Soap Box Champion / Perry Pendley, 15, winner of the 1965 Jefferson County Soap Box Derby, will be rooting for his 11-year-old brother, Merle, in the 1966 Derby starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at George Ward Park. Perry is wearing the champ's uniform issued to all winners at the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, which will run Aug. 6 this year. PErry and Merle are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Hansel Pendley, 2522 36th Ave., North."
