Stringer, the former mayor and city manager of Hobson City, had been arrested on January 14, 1980, on several charges of mismanaging city funds, though he maintained that the real issue was "racial-based jealousy." From the article: "Oh, the building's just a symbol, he says, a symbol of what surrounding white communities dislike most about all-black Hobson City. A symbol, he says, of racial-based jealousy because blacks grabbed up a large hunk of federal dollars and started building a city hall to rival that of any white dominated local government in the area." |
