Johnson served as a federal judge in the state from 1955 to 1999. While on the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama in the 1950s and 1960s, he established himself as a fair and progressive justice, ruling in favor of the plaintiffs in a number of landmark civil rights cases.
