This image was likely taken in August 1945, around the time that Brown announced that he would be retiring; a related article was published in the Birmingham News on August 30, 1945: "After more than 40 years of faithful service, Fire Chief Alfred Brown is leaving the Birmingham Fire Department. His retirement will become effective Nov. 1. The 'Chief,' as he was called by the thousands who knew him, walked into Commissioner of Public Safety Eugene Connor's office yesterday and told the man who had appointed him to his position as chief of the Fire Department eight years ago, that 'I have been in this business long enough. I think I'll take a rest.'" |
