Men on the steps of the African American First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, after a riot protesting the Freedom Riders' arrival in the city.

Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, and Wyatt Tee Walker are standing in the doorway at the top of the steps. A mass meeting was held at the church that evening in honor of the Freedom Riders, but the mob that rioted held them prisoner within the building.
