This photograph was published in the Birmingham News on January 17, 1971, with the following caption: "The Navy's His Gift - For 10 years now - ever since he was 10 years old - Raymond Carl Lyon, of Columbiana, has been plotting to join the United States Navy. He vowed he'd join up the very day he came of age. Friday was the day, the seventeenth anniversary of his birth. He was born Jan. 17, 1924. Young men are not eligible for the Navy until they become 17. Raymond is shown above at left, as Lieut. Comdr. R. B. Miller placed him under oath at the Navy Recruiting Station int he Federal Building. Shortly after, he and another contingent of Alabama boys left for a navy training station. Raymond is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Lyon, of Columbiana, and a former student of Columbiana High School."
