This image was published in the Birmingham News on March 10, 1941, with the following caption: "Shelby Gambling House Raid - Three Shelby County deputies and a former deputy gave 40 or 50 fashionably groomed men and women from Birmingham an exciting few minutes early Sunday morning when they raided one of the Shelby County 'Gold Coast' gambling houses which flourish on the Birmingham trade. Above are scenes of the raid and some of the officers who staged it. In the upper view is shown Sheriff W. B. White checking over an array of roulette, dice and other paraphernalia seized by the raiders. Besides the roulette wheel, two large dice tables, three roscoe machines and other equipment seized was stored in the Shelby County jail, where the picture was taken." |
