Description
Summary:A similar image was published in the Birmingham News on April 1, 1939, with the following caption: "Price of Liberty - Walt Chipman, 59-year-old itinerant scissors grinder, scrapes off his long beard in his cell in Jefferson County Jail in order to get out from behind the bars. Chipman, charged with vagrancy, Friday was ordered to shave by Judge H. B. Abernethy unless he wanted to remain in jail. Chipman was released Saturday morning after he had reconsidered and cut his whiskers, which he said took eight years to grow. Sans whiskers, Chipman appeared before Judge Abernethy and told him he was on his way to the home of relatives in Jay County, Indiana."
