| Summary: | After the death of her husband, Senator James B. Allen, in June 1978, Governor George Wallace appointed Maryon to fill the vacant seat until a special election could be held in November. The winner of that election would serve out the remaining two years of James Allen's original term; Maryon ran for the seat but lost to fellow Democrat Donald Stewart, who ultimately defeated his Republican opponent to win the seat. She remained in Washington until 1981, when she moved to Birmingham and established the Maryon Allen Company, which specialized in redesigning and restoring antique textiles.
