A Florence Herald report of Sept. 22, 1922 that in order to provide increased facilities to Florence's African-American children the board of education has had the old Fifth Ward two room school building (built ca. 1890s) relocated to the John F. Slater School campus on South Court Street. The paper notes that Roach & Abernathy Contractors had finished this job last week, that the old Fifth Ward building had been totally refurbished and painted inside, as well as the Slater building itself (built in 1900).
The paper also noted the establishment of a Negro school at the Pine Ridge Camp, near the Wilson Dam, for the black children of the workers in that section. Finally, it notes the hiring of five teachers for the Slater School and one for the Pine Ridge School. |
