Summary: | (Pre-war photograph; no uniformed photograph is known to exist. -- W. Davis.) Elected to Congress in 1859 and initially against secession. Returned to Tennessee after Fort Sumter and raised a company of volunteers. Elected colonel of the 7th Tennessee Infantry in May 1861 and promoted to brigadier general in May 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Cheat Mountain campaign, the Peninsular campaign, and Seven Pines. Hopkins was killed at Seven Pines in May 1862 and is buried in Lebanon, Tennessee.
