Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, 1846. Appointed colonel of the 16th Virginia Infantry in May 1861 and promoted to brigadier general in December 1861. Major campaigns and battles include the Peninsular campaign, Chancellorsville, Charleston, and Petersburg. After the war, he served for several years as an officer in Egyptian Army.
