Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general. Only known wartime photograph.) Graduated from West Point, 1858. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in April 1861 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army shortly afterward. After promoting through the grades, Thomas was promoted to brigadier general in August 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, the Kentucky campaign, Stones River, and the defense of Mobile. After the war, Thomas returned to Georgia, where became a farmer and educator.
