Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Businessman, U.S. congressman, and governor of antebellum Virginia. Commissioned as a colonel in the 49th Virginia Infantry at the outbreak of war. Promoted to brigadier general in April 1863 and major general in August 1863. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, the Peninsular campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Elected as governor of wartime Virginia in 1863; he took office in January 1864 and remained in that position until the end of the war. After the war, Smith returned to farming and politics.
