Dewitt, who was a jeweler prior to the Civil War, began to make swords for the Confederacy early on. At first he shared a large building with Louis Haiman and gun manufacturers Greenwood and Gray. He moved to a smaller building of his own, but sold his factory to Greenwood and Gray when he wsa unable to compete effectively with L. Haiman and Brother. This sword was used by 2nd Lieutenant Socrates Speigner, 59th Alabama Infantry, who was killed near Petersburg, Virginia, on April 6, 1865, three days before Lee's surrender. |
